During his freshman year at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro,  he began taking ballet classes at a community theatre.

He travelled to New York City after hearing about an internship at a dance school from a friend. 

In the fall, Rigsby returned to Greensboro, where he came out to his peers as gay. In 2009, he relocated permanently to New York City.

Rigsby was born in California, but he grew up in Greensboro, North Carolina.
