Rare large meteor lights up Wellington

Residents of North Island in Wellington were surprised to see a large meteor in the skies above them

The meteor was sighted at 1.52pm and it was around 1m wide

A flash, big booms and faint rumbling sounds were reported by the residents

It was confirmed by New Zealand’s meteorological service that its Wellington radar had picked up an “interesting signature”

The country’s last meteor was seen 23 years before on 7 July 1999

Mike Cousins, a resident near Wellington said that he was working from home when the room lit up with a bluey-orange hue

Scientists said that a meteor sighting during daytime is rare
